Reading Time: 3 minutes

IS out. I could not fall asleep this morning at 5:30 AM, 2.5 hrs before the official score release. Logged into the web, hope to see something, nothing there, watched some Bloomberg TV, and back to sleep (listened to iPod actually because I could not fall asleep).

8:00 AM, back to computer again, could not logged in because too many people trying to connect to CFAInstitute web site. After 15 minutes’ unsuccessful tries, I did logged in. The first page says “June 2008 Pass Rate
Level I Pass Rate: 35%”.

I know I could be right at the threshold. Why not make it 40% so that I could pass 🙂

After I logged in, I got what I expected “failed”, and I was at the top among the candidates who failed in the test (see below).

Appendix I: CFA explanation about placement:
We have divided the full group of failed candidates into ten approximately equal score bands. Your score band below shows how your overall score on the exam compares with all other failed candidates.

For example, if your reported score band is 1, you scored in approximately the bottom 10% of failed candidates. If your reported score band is 2, your score was within the next band width ranging from approximately the bottom 11% to 20% of failed candidates. If your score band is reported as 10, you scored in the top 10% of all failed candidates.

Performance band of your overall score among all candidates who failed the exam: 10

Level 1: Pass

The table below illustrates your subject matter strengths and weaknesses. The three columns on the right are marked with asterisks to indicate your performance on each question or topic area.

Multiple Choice
Q# Topic Max Pts < =50% 51%-70% >70%
– Alternative Investments 8 * – –
– Corporate Finance 20 – – *
– Derivatives 12 * – –
– Economics 24 – * –
– Equity Investments 24 – – *
– Ethical & Professional Standards 36 – – *
– Financial Statement Analysis 48 – * –
– Fixed Income Investments 28 – * –
– Portfolio Management 12 – – *
– Quantitative Methods 28 – * –

My comment: it appears my score (see below) is very close to the one above. The only reason I can think, is there is difference between 51% and 70% (CFA institute only gives a range).

Look at individual sections, (I scored) more than 70% on Equity Investments (max points 24) , Ethics (36) and Fixed Income Investments (28); 51% to 70% on Financial Statement Analysis (48), Quantative Methods (28), Economics (24), Corporate Finance (20), Derivatives (12), Portfolio Management (12); less than 50% on Alternative Investments (8).

I will spend next few days deciding whether to take this Dec test. If I do, I will try to knock off Financial Statement Analysis (48), Quantative Methods (28), Economics (24), Corporate Finance (20), while maintaining 70% on Equity Investments (max points 24) , Ethics (36) and Fixed Income Investments (28).
