Why I think MR is better than HMIN?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

HMIN looked cheap these days, should we jump in and buy it? I have both MR and HMIN, and as a matter of fact, I bought some more HMIN after its disappointing earning report. My mistake. You may think because HMIN has been to $49, and now it’s trading $29.50, isn’t a big discount? Yes or No. I hope HMIN won’t go much lower because it is my largest holding now (I’m looking for opportunities to exit).

We Got the Message: Stamp Tax Increase

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The policy makers in China found the silver bullet finanlly, the Shanghai composite index dropped 280 points or 6.5% today May 30, as seen from this news from Bloomberg. This is the biggest drop in a day since Feb 27 (9% drop). The policy makers have warned the investors (or more accurately speculators) for a while, the head of central bank said some words during an international meeting (remember the vice chairman of people’s congress, Mr. Chen’s similar words late last year?); two interest rate hikes; three bank reserve rate hikes. But the new investors seemed ignoring all those warnings, as we have seen from the record account openings since March. We have 100 million accounts in China now. Let me quote some words regarding the “bubble” (I was told this was said by Buffet, but have not verified the source):

Reminder: Crocs to Split 2 for 1

Reading Time: < 1 minute

I put it in my Yahoo calendar a while ago. But I have not added my positions because it did not fall to the range I wanted to pull my trigger. Although there are heavy insider sellings lately.

“Shareholders of record May 31 will get an additional share for each they hold on June 14”, see this announcement for more details.

Shopping Clothes and Stocks

Reading Time: < 1 minute

I went to mall again during this weekend. There are many malls in St. Louis, the closest (to my home) also the most expensive one, is the Plaza Frontenac. When I first visited there years ago, I was amazed to see the price tags of stuff there, things such as Boss, Gucci, stores like Saks Fifth Ave., and Nieman Marcus. It made me think St. Louis is not a small town. The shopping experience is in deep contrast to other malls such as Galleria, which is meant for average people.

Anyway I only buy stuff at one store at Frontenac, that’s J. Crew., and I only buy when things are on sale and I found they fit me well. For instance, today I bought a broken-in zip fly chino for 14.99 (plus 1.14 sales tax), the listed price was 64.50.

Home Inns and Alibaba update

Reading Time: < 1 minute

I got some more Home Inns (HMIN) today. Nothing fundamental has changed at Home Inns, as I said in my previous post.

Separately, Ma Yun, the big mouth at Alibaba, speaks again. We all know he likes to brag about how great will Alibaba become, but this time he is saying “China does not have a pure Internet company”. Duh? How about Baidu?

Postal Services Not Always the Cheapest

Reading Time: < 1 minute

I believe most people would think that Postal Services is usually cheaper compared to UPS or Fedex, this is not always. Today I was about to send a parcel at US Postal Service (USPS), but there were 13 people ahead of me. Don’t want to wait for another 20 minutes, and also want to check out the Fedex Ground, I decided to leave. I went to their web site  first. The rate was $16.95, which is lower than the quote I got from USPS web site.

After the comparison shopping, I sent the item via Fedex Ground at local Kinko (Fedex) store. One caveat in Fedex is the packaging material is more expensive than USPS. I packed the stuff using my own box so this is not an issue.

When to Fill up Gas?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

So $3 gas is back. Last time it was Katrina, this time I heard it was because some of the refineries were taken offline for maintainence. For us average consumers, since we can not trade in current (regular) car for hybrid, nor can we buy cheaper gas and store it somewhere. We have to fill up when the gas price is cheap (relatively). I found a good sign of gas price going up. There are two gas stations near my house: Shell and Exxon. Usually they don’t raise the price at the same time. So…when I saw one gas station already changed the price (up), I would go to the other one and fill up.

Stock Reading at Mall

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I went to West County mall in the weekend, my first trip after coming back. Among all the St. Louis malls, I like West County the best because it has some of my favorite products (or stores): Apple store; Journeys, the shoe store has Crocs and Heelys; Dick’s Sporting Good has Crocs and Under Armour. Here is my impression on them.

Xinhua Finance Media XFML Update

Reading Time: < 1 minute

I really don’t want to talk this stock any more. But thought I may shed some light on this company’ new controversy, here is an article from market watch. To put long words short, Xinhua Finance Media Limited, failed to mention its CFO was under SEC investigation in its IPO prospectus. I don’t know legal side of the things, it seems they failed at least the investors. Similar things can be said for its underwriters?

Separately, I received their paper prospectus in the mail a while ago. This thing is about 400 pages, about 2 inches thick. I don’t know why they send this in the paper (investors can always read it online). Maybe they could boost their printing division’s revenue a bit by doing this.

China Central Bank Raised the Rate

Reading Time: < 1 minute

You can read all this in JRJ.com if you know Chinese. My take on this is policy only works when market does not anticipate this. This time China Central Bank did give the investors (speculators) a surprise. But fundamentally, the growth of economy won’t slow down, and the company earning growth should continue for a while. Even in the short term, it may embolden the speculators because this removes another cloud (expect no interest hike for a while). People simply won’t move money from stock back to savings to get the 0.27% interest increase.

I think these two reasons also explains why the stock market is so hot in China?
