Mindray Q3 report

Reading Time: < 1 minute

(Update) I also listened into its conference call, and it confirmed some of my thought: Chinese domestic market becomes more friendly; south America has strongest international growth, while NA has the slowest.

(Original) I went to Panera bread this morning. Here is what I saw: Bagel, 89 cents; coffee, $1.59 to $1.79. These prices haven’t changed from 3 months ago. No time to check out sandwich price (will do it later). By the way, its stock (Nasdaq:PNRA) closed under $40 ($39.28) yesterday! Sounds like a bargain?

Seriously, Mindray (NYSE:MR) had another good quarter. From its earning report, Chinese goverment finally step in and bought lots of diagnostic stuff. I think this was delayed by the anti-corruption movement last year. Also, the numbers from Europe and South America are quite strong. In other words, the US did not have a good number last quarter. Note US is supposed to be the growth driver this year. I am not sure is the purchase is delayed by the sub-prime crisis. Overall, Mindray is on the track. This is a stock one can own and have good sleep in the night.

CROX not so fantastic quarter

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Crocs (Nasdaq:CROX) reported a solid quarter yesterday. It also raised its own year 2007 guidance, but the number is not enough to exceed the street’s “sky high” expectation. The stock already got crushed in the after hour and pre-market trading. It’s likely it will suffer for a while. But I think the fundamental of the business is intact. From my observation in China, this thing just got started…let’s see what Olympics can do for this next year.

Another interesting story about Crocs. When I told my wife that I will have big “paper loss” on CROX stock today, she said why didn’t I sell it yesterday. Yeah, I agree I was a bit too optimistic about the stock. She also said the Crocs should sell few shoes as the weather becomes colder. Very much true. I think that’s one reason the company guided conservatively for the Q4 (and 2007 full year) results.

Seasonality is more an issue for international growth because Europe and Japan, the main growth area currently, is usually colder than US in winter. Unfortunately Australia and Brazil can not make up that…

Crocs, Mindray and QDII

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Crocs (CROX) stock is on a roll lately, as it’s closing 3rd quarter and holding two investor conference (link to webcast) in NYC and London. I added some more CROX last week when the escalator accidents is on the news. Another reason is I sold WX. I think both CROX and WX are good long term but I want to bet on “more sure” things.

Mindray (MR) has also done well lately. Incidently it’s also holding a conference in the US. At this time the fastest growth will from the US market. Chinese domestic market will also have some growth but the goverment still yet to roll out reforms in the health care (hospital) industry. Notheless I think (for the good or bad) Chinese patients still got to see doctors, so I’m not worried about MR’s prospect in China.

Secular growth, Mindray, New Oriental

Reading Time: 3 minutes

I was looking for a secular growth stock in China. By secular growth I mean the business grows continously without the normal business cycle. One benifit of secular growth is it usually does not go up or down a lot as economy cycle does. A side benifit of this is we (investors) can sleep better in the night 🙂

The opposite of “secular” is “cyclical”. For example, we normal think the following industries are “cyclical”:

1) Oil, metals and other commodities;

2) Real estate (we have seen the downturn in the US housing market lately);

Baby thrown out of bath tub

Reading Time: < 1 minute

These days it’s not easy for investors who hold US stocks, because the market has been in declining mode after the sub-prime woes. Do you still remember the DOW 14,000? That was July 19, as I wrote a post “IS Dow 14000 relevant“. Well, relevant or not, the Dow has retreated and it’s now under 13,000.

As individual investors we can not precict the market, nor should we fight against the market. But as general market declines, usually there are some good stocks go on sale. For examples, the Crocs (CROX) and Mindray (MR). Both companies reported good earnings, got a pop, and now went back to the pre-earning price. Some possible explanations: CROX got dragged down by the weak US consumer sentiment, Heelys HLYS’ crash; for Mindray, I really could not find a good reason other than short term investors move money to WuXi Pharma Tech (WX). Both companies (CROX and MR) had some insider sell activities too.

Mindray reports a solid Q2

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Here are the results. The important thing is they beat the est. and raised the guidance again. I also listened to its conference call, some interesting information:

1) The company plans to increase its international sales headcount to more than 200 people by the end of 2007 and to open offices in Amsterdam, Mexico City, Moscow, Sao Paulo and Toronto.

2) At the end of the second quarter 2007, the company had more than 850 R&D staff and is on track to increase R&D headcount to more than 1,000 employees by the end of 2007.

It appears the international growth is the main theme for the company. The domestic growth is also good, but not as fast as US market.

Ineresting article about Mindray

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I found this one from China Business Feature. Some of the interesting paragraphs:

How they started the R&D of medical devices?
“But unlike other distributors, Xu Hang, who holds a degree in medical engineering, started independent innovation of some products in 1992. Mindray’s first products included China’s first single-parameter blood oxygen saturation monitor. “At the time, as China’s hospitals had never used Chinese-made devices, they preferred the imported multi-parameter monitors. So our products did not sell well,” says Xu. Customers didn’t try Mindray’s equipment until 1995 because of problems in technology, quality and sales service. In the early stages of its development, Mindary was basically an opportunist. It hadn’t gone deep in researching the industry. It would generally sell anything that appealed to the market. It even sold products that had nothing to do with medicine.”

Market acceptance:
“Despite its success, Mindray still faces “discrimination” on international markets. In the Middle East, for example, American products are always chosen in the first place, and then those from Japan and Korea. Chinese products are given a very low priority. But the situation has been slowly changing since Mindray was listed. “Agents that we couldn’t contract with before are now coming to us,” claims Xu. The listing made Mindray more popular and trustworthy in overseas markets. Xu hopes to build on that trust with an international brand image for Mindray – that’s why he chose the NYSE instead of the NASDAQ.”

Blackstone, Crocs and Starbucks

Reading Time: < 1 minute

People who bought the Blackstone (BX) at its IPO debut (around 35), will regret “chasing hot stocks” now. I don’t know how the Chinese State Investment Co. (who took 8% stake at around $3 b) felt about this. Oh well, they are in this for long haul.

Crocs stock (CROX) got a hit today. Barrons ran an article on weekend reminding people taking some profit now, I did it on Monday. But I’m still bullish on the company’s business, especially interntional front: hope people don’t just buy knockoffs?

Mindray Gaining Momentum in US

Yesterday they did a presentation at Goldman Sachs 28th Annual conference (no web cast). Today they announced two new products getting FDA approval. The following picture is BC-3200, a hematology analyzer.
