Reading Time: < 1 minute

“We’ve arranged a society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science and technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces.” ― Carl Sagan via X

We Always Do Things This Way

Reading Time: 2 minutes

This is probably 6 most dangerous words in the English, from my observation.

In the News: (ABC News) Person of interest in custody after fatal Brown University shooting, official says. (AP via Yahoo) Police have person of interest in custody over Brown University shooting that killed 2, wounded 9. And let me quote a bit below:

“We all, intellectually, knew it could happen anywhere, including here, but that’s not the same as it happening in our community, and so this is an incredibly upsetting and emotional time for Providence, for Brown, for all of us,” he (Mayor of Providence, Brett Smiley) said. “It’s not something that we should have to train for, but we have.”

This is after the 1999 Columbine High School massacre and 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, as well as 2022 Uvalde school shooting (all links go to Wikipedia).

In the K to 12 school my kids go to, they do active shooter drills every year. And there was an incident recently in the HS my old daughter goes to.

There was some reforms here and there, but no outright ban on assault weapons or guns, as of now.

As I wrote this, I just saw another gun violence (tragedy) news in Australia, which has much stricter gun laws than the USA. (BBC News) Eleven killed in shooting targeting Jewish community at Australia’s Bondi Beach, police say. (AP) Mass shootings are rare in Australia. Here is a look at some previous attacks.

Statistics of Gun Violence is probably a complicated topic. But in general, fewer assault weapons, fewer guns and ammunitions in the wild, fewer gun violence or tragedy in our daily lives. A good example is in the country I am from (China), there was very few loss of lives from guns. China probably has one of the strictest gun laws in the world, btw.

Personally I think the three big mountains for Americans: Healthcare, Housing and College cost.

Odds and Ends, and Statistics

The average American’s net worth is $620,654, but that number means little. Here’s the figure that counts (MoneyWise via Yahoo)

As of 2024, median net worth in America is just $124,041, according to UBS. That’s an astonishing five times lower than the average net worth of $620,654.

In fact, by this measure, America is only the 15th wealthiest country in the world, lagging behind Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Italy. By comparison, the U.S. is the second wealthiest country based on average wealth.

…….

Investing just $575 a month into this index and assuming a similar growth rate would get you above the $124,041 threshold for median wealth in roughly 10-and-a-half years.

US Economy entering recession soon?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

(Update 11-12-2025) Lower-Income Individuals ‘Already in Recession,’ Says Atwater

(Original) It seems the US economy is increasingly two sided or two tiered: the haves and the have-nots. But now, it seems the haves may have some trouble too.

(NBC News) From fast food to beverage giants, brands see rising income inequality among customers with subtile “Consumer brands are adjusting to a two-tiered economy as the new normal. Yet there are signs that even high-income customers are under pressure.” And may I quote one line there – “This suggests that even a well-paying job is no longer a reliable source of financial stability compared with owning assets like stocks and real estate.”

I recall Warren Buffett or Charlie Munger once said: if you don’t make money when you sleep, you will work until you die. That quote is applicable here.

Yahoo Finance has an article – ‘A little concerning’: 2 crucial consumer groups under pressure are a warning sign for US economy that echos the two tiered economy.

The impact of digitization and streaming on content creators

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Overall, I think it probably made the content creators lives much harder. The list includes traditional newspaper and magazines, network TV (in the US, it’s the big 3 (ABC, CBS, and NBC) plus PBS, cable TV (there are many), local TV, and musicians including singers, song writers and bands. To some extent, it had impact on traditional radio stations too, but radio station in my opinion probably already had experience the disruption from TV and Internet (early days of Internet, Web 1.0 if I may), there are the digital radio stations such as Sirius and XM radios, but I think for the most part, radio stations survived – another reason is their operating cost is probably lower, with the exception of NPR.

In my earlier blog post a few years ago Industries got disrupted: I talked about:

once at Sam’s Club (Manchester road), I saw a lady who is probably laid off from the media industry. And she was doing samples there. We all praised her for her cooking skills for salmon samples. She said she had degrees in journalism but it’s hard to find jobs in that area 🙁

And it turns out I wrote more on this in another blog post – Thinking about opening a Roth IRA:

So I was at Sam’s club, tasting the free salmon sample. The lady passing out the Salmon said something funny “Being a Mizzou journalist graduate, I know how to propaganda”. Something like that. It sounds like she lost Journalist job. An old couple who complimented the salmon and the lady’s cooking (there is really not too much cooking because the main task was to warm it up, I think), said their daughter who is in graphic design, lost job since last July. I know it’s probably very difficult for journalists these days amid the new media etc (traditional media lost all the Ads revenue). My previous 2 jobs were in two industries that were both seriously affected by the government polices, luckily my skill can be transferred to other industry. I believe the two people can look at other relatively stable industry as well, as their skills can also transfer: good communication, writing and graphical design skills are always in demand. This is my chicken soup of the day.

These days we often hear layoffs or private equity companies buying or selling those traditional media companies. Even the big ones such as MSNBC etc. This is true in local media as well, e.g., stltoday and KSDK.

Music industry

I talked about it in my earlier blog post. As my friend who was a former attorney, and now has a side gig on Spotify told me the music industry is always “the top dog makes the most money, and it’s hard for the people below the top tier make much money”. That’s probably true, even in the CD, cassette, and the analog plastic disc days.

I also heard another friend who has presence on Spotify, and she said 1,000 plays on Spotify will bring in about 7 CNY (about $1). Again it’s not easy to get 1,000 plays for musicians or songs that are not very famous.

Reading Time: 3 minutes

I don’t want to reiterate what happened after George W Bush. During 2001 to 2009, the W’s presidency, I felt not that good. And I had similar feeling between 2017 and 2021 (and the January 6th made me sick, honestly). Now it’s Trump’s 2nd term, and we all know what happened in last 8 months or so. Basically, the Hispanics (the brown people) were treated horrendously. And not to mention the Korean engineers who came to help the Hyundai plant in Geogia.

September 11 Commission

This is their Wikipedia page. I do recall there were bi-partisan commission, and they did a lot of good work, reflecting what went wrong etc. But this is purely from technicality level, not political level. By that I mean, the people on the commission didn’t examine why the terrorists have so much hate towards America (government and people, not just military). In fact, if you pay a bit attention to that part of the world, the hate is not limited to the hardened terrorists, they are fairly common among ordinary people in some of countries in the middle east and northeastern Africa say Somalia. I remember rewatching this documentary Black Hawk Down last year and can get the sense of hate or resentment towards America. But neither the US government nor the American people pay attention to that, with the recent cut and shutdown of USAid, the work of trying to win heart and minds is totally gone now.

Here is a google AI summary:

======

The 9/11 Commission Report identified critical failures in U.S. intelligence, border security, and aviation security, leading to the 9/11 attacks, and proposed a global counterterrorism strategy focused on attacking terrorists, disrupting their support networks, and preventing attacks. It recommended structural reforms to improve government coordination, establish a new Department of Homeland Security, and enhance national security capabilities through improved intelligence sharing, border controls, and cybersecurity measures. Key Failures Identified

  • Failures of Imagination, Policy, Capabilities, and Management: The report highlights fundamental flaws in how the U.S. government perceived and responded to the terrorist threat before 9/11.
  • Intelligence and Information Sharing Issues: The intelligence community failed to follow up on potential leads, recognize tampered visa applications, and share information effectively.
  • Border and Aviation Security Loopholes: The U.S. had permeable borders, weak immigration controls, and inadequate aviation security measures.
  • Lack of Military Options: Before 9/11, there were limited military options to deal with the evolving terrorist threat, and unsuccessful diplomatic efforts were made to address it.
  • Inadequate Response Systems: Homeland defense and emergency response systems were not fully developed or effective.

Key Recommendations

  • Global Strategy Against Terrorism: The report called for a coherent strategy that included attacking terrorists, disrupting their financing and operations, and preventing future attacks.
  • Strengthening Homeland Security: It recommended creating a unified homeland security system, including the establishment of a new Department of Homeland Security.
  • Improved Intelligence Community Management: The report suggested organizational changes to enhance intelligence, including better human resource development and the establishment of a central security coordination body.
  • Enhanced Border and Immigration Security: Specific recommendations included implementing a comprehensive biometric entry-exit screening system and setting standards for identification documents to control travel and prevent terrorism.
  • Strengthened Aviation Security: This included improving profiling systems, developing a robust “no-fly” list, and improving security in other parts of the transportation system.
  • Protecting Civil Liberties: The report called for safeguards for privacy and civil liberties within new security systems and recommended a board within the executive branch to oversee adherence to these guidelines.

But at the same time, what do I care? I have lived in this country since 1997 and worked since 2000, and our two kids were born and grew up here and they are Americans (US citizens). I am in middle 50s and I think I have done my part on many things in life, and now I like to step back on many things that could potentially make me unhappy: this include my 9 to 5 day job, as well as the US politics. I am doing something fun now, from swimming, to learning music (guitar and piano) and so on.

I think I am going to live outside the USA for a few years after my retirement. But in my crummy years I will probably stay reasonably close to my kids and that probably means USA.

Why I came to the USA in 1997?

Reading Time: 4 minutes

For Chinese (Mandarin) version, you may listen to this podcast (YT Video). Note I didn’t reveal same exact details as below and the YT version may be longer in terms of content as well.

Wide gap between China and the US then

I think in simple terms, I wanted to come to the US and take a look. But there is more than that, because a bystander would ask, if you just want to take a look, you can just come for a visit.

Let me explain to you. I think “take a look” is more than literally “take a look”. It’s somewhat like when one says “check out a girl or a guy” for a date. It’s not actually you go and look at the other person closely. That’s not how it works,. So here a better explanation is “come to the USA, study for a few years” and get a real feel about it. As to why not just visit, or a few visits, not only it’s not practical for most Chinese people like me, due to visa restrictions, economy condition and so on, but also considering my original intent explained above.

Another reason, for me personally at least, “going abroad for study or graduate school” is a sort of dream, somewhat like going to college after high school (this is the blog post I wrote why I went to my college HUST, in Chinese). Not a lot kids in my village elementary school class attended college (in fact only 2 from my understanding, also a girl went to nursing school and become a nurse, she is the girl I liked, I understand it was at elementary school but I can still like somebody right 🙂

Along those lines, I think during the time I applied for graduate school in the USA, going abroad or studying abroad was still considered both an achievement by itself and a worthy cause or endeavor. Again I think this is mainly because China is way behind the west on economy, science and technology. Here is a chart that compares China and the US economy since 1960. If you look at the chart for a bit, in terms of purchasing power (not USD based GDP or something), China’s economy already eclipsed the USA in last few years. That’s one backdrop behind the current USA’s unprovoked trade war (tariffs) against China.

One example was seeing the bridges over the sea in Florida Key West area, in the 1994 movie True Lies. I recall seeing the movie in SH around that time. I want to find it in my own eyes that the things I saw in the movie is real. After coming to this country for almost 28 years, I haven’t made it to the key west bridges yet – but I believe they are real 🙂 A few years ago during pandemic, actually we planned about a vacation to south Florida, I think it was Everglades National Park and Key west. But we cancelled it eventually because of lack of interest for the group: we had 3 families and at the time it seems the interest just was not there.

Offer and visa

This also means usually only the students who received scholarships from the American universities got to come to study at the US then. I vaguely recall I heard from a professor in Rolla in June 1996, via email. Note that time email was still quite new in China. And I had to borrow email account and computer service from a friend in Fudan University at that time. Actually a bunch of my friends used the same email account, and they all got offer before me. And my offer came probably in late June.

During visa application/appointment, I vividly remember the girl who lined up next to me, at the US consulate SH then, and she didn’t have scholarships because she is studying for hospitality. But to her surprise, her visa was approved. I think a possible reason is that day is July 3rd, and the consulate people were happy and in July 4th holiday mood. But again this is rare case – a lot students’ visa application got denied because they are self funded.

I failed when I tried to get into SJTU (twice)

As I wrote in in my other blog post – How I went to the HUST I wanted attending the SJTU 上海交通大學 in Shanghai when I graduated from my high school.

And in year 1992/1993, when I had the opportunity to apply for graduate school, which in China is basically mainly done by 研究生入学考试 Graduate Student Entrance Exam, in a way similar to the world famous Gaokao.

Some more background information, in China, back in those days probably only 3 cities are considered top tier, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. And for people who are from Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, I think Shanghai usually has special place in the heart because it’s neighboring both provinces.

But I failed again getting into SJTU in the Graduate Student Entrance Exam in 1993, after failing in 1989 in the Gaokao.

Going aboard is, in a way, best revenge to prove myself, and in many ways, graduate schools in the US at that time late 1990s, including University of Missouri at Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology), are better than most Chinese universities including SJTU.

北漂

This experience also somewhat reminds me of 北漂, Google search 为什么歌手要北漂

Quote:

When I first arrived at the apartment at 805 State Street in Rolla, it somewhat reminds me of Shanghainese in Tokyo or Shanghai migrant workers in Japan. It was a bit rough, to say the least. But I know the rent is fairly low or very cheap.

What to write next?

I think I am going to talk more about “my 1st impression of America”, and “how I feel about America now” in my later series on this America topic.
