当时我在我旅馆旁边散步。我住的旅馆是凯悦嘉轩虹桥商务区 Hyatt Place Hongqiao CBD (I talked about this hotel here)。
Okay, it’s Saturday and it’s good time for some chicken soup.
I went to swimming at the JCC indoor pool just now, with my younger daughter because she prefers the indoor pool over the outdoor one, also her tennis lesson got cancelled at the last minute. So I got to hang out with her for a bit: for real it’s just a bit, because she will be 11 in about 3 days, and I usually do my lap swimming. She mostly plays by herself in the recreational pool (the water is slightly warmer there). The temperature at the lap swimming pool is slightly lower, probably at 78 Fahrenheit or 25.6 Celsius, and my younger daughter doesn’t like either lap swimming or cold water. She calls it the cold pool.
When I was doing lap swimming, I noticed at the other end, a little girl who is in green swimming suit, she is probably 5 years old, and she was scared to get into the water. I swam to that end, and hear the young male swimming coach says “you have to go in either today or next time (assume next Saturday). The coach is probably a college student, I guess. The girl didn’t want to go. Eventually the coach gave up. After a while, I noticed the girl’s dad, with mom and her little sister nearby, helped the girl get into the water (the cold pool) the first time 🙂 It’s quite accomplishment. Now I remember the 1st time my older daughter (now 15) got into the cold cool the 1st time, many years ago (probably summer 2017 with the one and only coach Alyssa L).
Now if I can convince the soon to be 11 year old to swim again tomorrow. Btw, I am back to swimming daily after about 7 years break (was doing joggling or walking in last 7 years or so).
(07-13-2025) Was able to play Racquet ball with my younger daughter a bit at the J. A small win. I also swam at the J (both outdoor, and indoor pools). Went to the outdoor pool first, swam 200 yards, it started raining cat and dog, and everyone went inside.
(07-22-2025) Yesterday evening, I was napping and sleeping on my bed in the evening, at about 10 pm or so, I got up, and my older daughter noticed me getting up and asked “dad, can I have your tweezers (link goes to google). I realized she was a bit shy to wake me up. Similarly, probably 2 nights ago, my younger daughter saw I was napping, and because she usually says “good night” to me before her bedtime, she just climbs to my bed, and reach out her hand, and gently said “good night dad” 🙂 Back to my older daughter, it’s hard to get a hug from her nowadays. The other day, before the hug, she said: do you smell (meaning do you have bad body smell 🙂 I fully understand. They are 11 and 15 years old, respectively. We Chinese have a saying: 男女有别 nan nv you bie (link goes to google).
(07-23-2025) S6 suggested I took her to get boba tea at Sharesweet in the afternoon. And I did.
(07-26-2025) Something in my mind: I realized that if I sign up S8 for a math acceleration class and she will probably have better chance to pass the acceleration on 08/08. Now I will probably study a bit algebra 2 and try to poke her around (it’s not an easy job to say the least, because she doesn’t want to share).
(07-27-2025) S6 suggested I took her to the Korean grocery store next to the Tai’ke. And I did.
An old family picture (I published this photo earlier, actually, in this blog post). I talked a bit about my paternal grandma and my big uncle in that blog post.
Back: my grandma, my dad; Front (left to right), Minjie, and big bro, and my little big bro
Interestingly I saw that my grandma holds me, and my dad holds my little big bro. I think our mom was probably at work, and at the time she doesn’t have much freedom to walk off work. But in real world, my grandma likes me the most among 3 grand sons, my dad likes my little big bro the most, and my mom likes my big bro the most 🙂
I think this is probably taken in year 1974 or 1975. Let me will explain why. My big bro is wearing a red scarf 红领巾 which also means he already attends the primary school (or elementary school). You have to believe it’s red although it’s a black and white picture. Both my little big bro and I don’t have red scarf and we haven’t started attending primary school yet (we are all about 2 years apart), kids usually start attending elementary school at about age of 7 (in the case of our big bro, he was 6 and a half when he stared). My big bro started school on 09/01/1974, my little big bro on 09/01/1976 and I started school on 09/01/1978.
Back to my grandma
My grandma Zhang San’mei 张三妹 was born in year 1904. Her name 三妹 means she is the 3rd daughter of the family. She was born in 北仑霞浦. And she died in year 1988, in November 1988, when I was attending the Zhenhai Middle (High) School as a senior*.
Explanation about the High School in CHN: in China there are only 3 grades in school, and I was in the last year of high school. Note in China, the middle school includes both Junior Middle, which is equivalent to Junior High or Middle School in the USA. And Senior Middle, which is equivalent to Senior High in the USA.
My grandma gave birth to 7 kids: 6 girls and 1 boy (my dad, also he is also the youngest). Only 4 out 7 kids grew to their adulthood. My grandma sometimes would tell me the story of one daughter (she was probably between my two younger aunts 姑妈), and she was very beautiful. But she died before 14 or 16: I don’t know the exact age or circumstance under which she died. Keep in mind in those days girls were treated much worse than boys (I mean 1930s), and the fact they lived in rural areas does not help either.
My grandma is quite smart, as I talked about her smartness in my maternal grandma’s piece. Keep in mind 2 grandmas have different kinds of smarts: my paternal grandma can read a bit (she probably attended a few years of school when she was a little kid), my maternal grandma doesn’t read, but she has attention to details on household work and homemaking, cooking and sewing (mostly by hand). Also, I am both grandma’s favorite grandson, among my two older bro and me.
My primary caregiver
I have no memory of my grandpa because he died in December 1972, when I was only one year and 5 months old. My grandma helped my parents to raise us 3 boys – note this is very common arrangement in China, up until in recent decades. The social contract is we take care of our parents when they are aging, and the grandparents (our parents) usually help with babysitting when possible. This is pretty much true when my mom took care of my big brother’s daughter, and because they both live in Beilun, and also because both my mom and my dad were fairly young. They are each 53, and 52 years respectively, older than my niece – my big brother’s daughter. But I saw issues around those kinds of social contracts as increasingly one side doesn’t honor her/his side of the contract. Because it’s mainly just a custom, or moral responsibility, there are very little the justice system can do about it.
Back to caregiving part, as I think it’s more important. Keep in mind both my parents work full time even when we were babies (infants). Some of the job of taking care of babies fall to my grandmas (I think both my maternal and paternal grandma). Things such trivial as help baby fall into sleep or co-sleep. My understanding, in China co-sleeping with parents or grandparents when kids were little, is still quite common. I understand co-sleeping does cause other types of issues, which I am not getting into in this blog post.
She cooked and fed us
This is especially true in the summer breaks, when we spent about 2 months at our home in Xiao’men. I have said in other occasions, I did hide behind her back during vaccine drive, and especially when the Da Tou He Shang (大头和尚) showed up, during Chinese new year celebrations.
She has some money from my aunts – she would buy candies for us when she goes to the 小店; she saves moon cakes for us, they were sent by the aunts in Shanghai; she also buys fishes and cooks for us, sometimes.
Some fun episodes or stories
In most of her life, she doesn’t have a TV. Our family bought a TV in winter 1986 (note she passed away in fall 1988). She doesn’t understand or appreciate all the sports such as basketball, badminton, gymnastics or soccer. I recall we played badminton in the courtyard during very hot summer afternoon. We were kids then, and we were not that scared of the hot sun and so on. She just felt frustrated when we won’t listen to her and stop playing. She would say: boys, if you have that much of energy, why go to the fields or farm do some real farm work 🙂
Lap pool (warm water, temperature is probably at 80F): 25 yards
Outdoor
They have two kinds of setups for the lap swimming
Shorter: about 25 yards
Longer: about 25 meters (about 27.43 yards)
Those numbers are a bit trickier because they are not standard. And I got it from my own try and error, via my Apple watch. I assume Apple watch is measuring the pool length correctly.
Need some confirmation as I haven’t been there for a long time.
(Update 06-24-2025)
Today (this evening) it was a bit usual because a boy approached me and asked whether I speak English. I said yes, and he asked if I could teach him to swim. It looks like he can swim to some extent. I showed him and his friend how to breeze via mouth above the water. Also, the very basics of breaststroke. The boy is 11, his friend is 9 and the boy’s big sister is 12. They all know some swimming or can swim some: but they seem have not taken formal swimming lessons at the J or somewhere equivalent.
I never in my life would think I would teach kids swimming. I never taught my own kids. I did teach my wife a bit re: breathing or blow the water (suck in air and leave the water out via mouth). I don’t mind teaching kids one a while, but if every time I go to lap swimming, and I could not find an empty or semi-empty lap, I may have 2nd thoughts on this.
(Update 06-25-2025)
I am continuing adjusting the length of the pool on my Apple Watch. Today I set it to 31 yards. This thing puzzles me a bit: if the Apple watch can measure my swimming distance, why it needs the pool length. It seems it’s using the pool length to do some kind of calibration, so that it could come up a nice round number for the total swimming distance.
I decided to swim at the JCC last Thursday 05/15/25 as it was quite hot that day – the high is in the middle 80s. I didn’t like the sun and the warm temperature when I walk outside. So, I decided to go back to swimming at the J. I did swim at the J almost daily between 2012 and 2016/2017, as I explained in this blog post.
I switched to mostly running and walking since year 2017. And I didn’t do much swimming in last 7 or 8 years. But I decided to give swimming another try. And I think I probably swim the longest distance in my life, 500 yards today and yesterday – assuming the outdoor pool at the Creve Coeur J is 25 yards.
Actually in the first 3 days I thought the length is 50 yards. Now we are talking about 坑叔的英制 🙂
Close the ring
One advantage of swimming over walking/running is it’s much easier to close the move/exercise rings on Apple Watch (my smart watch over the years) via swimming. 500 yards plus some very modest walking is enough for me. Note in last month or so, I walked probably 6 or 7 miles a day (15,000 steps), 大概是每天走十公里左右。现在我只要游五百米就行了。
PS:
Something came to my mind today. We know the health insurance premium in the USA is quite expensive nowadays. I think the insurance I have for my family is probably $1,500 a month if I buy it from the marketplace. On the other hand, the J family membership is about $170 a month. So roughly 1/10 of the health insurance premium. If I can use the membership and keep myself away from the doctors and hospital, it’s not only saving money for me, for insurance and my employer, it also makes me happy (when I am not sick). Exercise is really the best option here.
Short videos 短视频 (short form content on Wikipedia) are getting popular nowadays.
I have some reservations on the shorts, YT shorts or anything equivalent. Below is not a complete list but let me try list some of the popular shorts platforms. My main reservations are the short durations of videos, their impact on kids’ focuses, and the relatively short time span of short videos in the internet and social media history.
YT Shorts: I know my younger daughter only watches the YT shorts when she gets my phone 🙂
Douyin 抖音 (since Sept 2026): I don’t have account for now. But I did watch two short videos today. Also, this series (or playlist) looks/sounds good to me at least 🙂
For douyin we have to have a China based mobile phone and Chinese ID. In other words the app is not open to foreigners or to outside world. ByteDance’s TikTok serves that market.
This also makes me to think – maybe TikTok and Douyin 抖音 got popular for a legit reason? 抖音和TT在短视频领域称霸是否意味着字节跳动有她的独到之处呢?就像最近的DeepSeek 对ChatGPT 的冲击和影响?一般一开始先是deny, 接下去说她们肯定是抄了我们的作业,最后发现不对啊,我们可能需要抄她们的作业?😂 Because their presentation or their content or their engagement are better than competitors (say, YT Shorts, and FB Reels)?
Also the 2025 graduation festival: this has been a thing since 2000, and I recall Bilibili was the early leader.
TikTok: I didn’t use it much. But I am aware that it’s widely popular among young people, and it may have taken a dip recently in the USA due to the recent law barring the app. But again whatever ByteDance (Douyin and TikTik) was doing seems working very well with the young people across the world. And for that I think as a minimum we should acknowledge their success: I understand sometimes it’s harder for people outside of China to acknowledge that Chinese people or engineers did something really impressive. If we can do that, we can follow up with some more helpful or meaningful questions such as why are they successful? What can we learn from them, and so on.
WeChat (short videos) 微信视频特指短视频: I don’t watch much of it honestly, especially recently – besides I watch a few music videos there 🙂 One reason I watched music is to stay away from politics. As some of you may know, I am not a fan of the current resident of the WH in the USA. From WeChat I saw content creators can also create playlist. Personally I haven’t found a way to share the link for the 合集 yet, note I don’t have a 微信公众号或者视频号.
Bilibili: they have both short videos and long videos. I am not fully converted to 弹幕 yet though 🙂 (Update) I finally moved up to level 2 there, after answering 60 questions (mostly are simple questions). I tried to verify myself as HUST alumni, but I failed 🙁
Here is one example of Bilibili video. Now I also recall the difference between Bilibili and Douyin: the former is a bit smaller in terms of scale, and also, they cater to the young and educated folks, while Douyin is for everyone. They have a playlist or 合集/视频选集 feature too, here is an example.
Also: I just uploaded my 1st video.
(06/04/25) I found a tip to not see the 弹幕 , just pop up the video in the bilibili app.
(06-11-25) Just learned sometimes the platform has exclusivity agreement with creator.
RedNote: or XiaoHongShu. It got a pop recent amid the TikTok ban. The bump or pop probably faded away. But the platform itself is quite popular among Chinese users and has quite good engagement from my observations. RedNote can create a playlist #合集 too. Here is one example Ayen何璟昕国粤双语合集. Note: it’s best to open this in the app. I noticed on my Mac it will automatically download the Android apk file for RedNote app. Or you may go to the xiaohongshu website and I am not sure if the same functionality exists on the website.
From consumer point of view, I think consume in moderation is the key. But from creator point of view, short video and playlist or 合集 in Chinese is a great way to generate interest.
Business model or income
I speculate one reason artists or creators do short video instead of longer or full length videos is due to copyright laws. I am not attorney but I guess a 20 or 30 seconds clip is less likely to cause issues for the copyright owners than the full length version.
This is more from the content creators or advertisers’ point of view.
I started learning Cantonese 粤语 from Duolingo about 40 days ago: learn via the Duolingo app or website is relatively easier than using tape recorder for TOEFL back in year 1995/1996. This is my 1st attempt to learn Cantonese. Note 粤语 was very popular when I was in college (1989 to 1993). I didn’t get chance to learn then, probably because I didn’t think too much of it at that time too.
First, I noticed the beauty of Cantonese and its resemblance to ancient Chinese 古汉语或文言文。Those beauty is available in other Chinese Dialects 方言 too. But my expectation is most dialects won’t survive in the foreseeable future, as we saw the China population continue moving into urban areas, and the population or standardization of mandarin cross the whole country, and to some extent cross the Chinese communities all over the world. In fact, in the old days in Shanghai I can hear many people talk in Shanghainese (or Shanghai dialect), now it’s quite rare. Even my brother who is in the bay area of the USA and I occasionally talks, we use mandarin, instead of the Ningbo dialect.
Second, I think I may move to HK and live there for an extended period of time after my kids going off to college. I liked HK a lot during our short visit last summer. (Update 09-02-2025) Re: moving or living in HK or SZ, my older daughter reminded me the other day, that I need to watch our younger daughter (aka her younger sister) a bit even if/when she goes off to college. This is a fair comment – I don’t intend to leave her completely when she is 18 (or 22 for that matter), and I will make sure either I will be present, or a trusted friend is around if she needs anything. I recall even in recent years, my parents who is almost 80, would remind me this or that – in their eyes, I am always a kid 🙂 Same rule applies here.
Some new knowledge or confirmed information
Cantonese could have different writing compared to mandarin Chinese, e.g., 古巨基 in 粤语 VS 古巨基 in 国语 (this one is actually simplified Chinese) vs. 台湾正体 (traditional Chinese). You will noticed even if you know mandarin either simplified Chinese or traditional Chinese, a lot of times it’s still quite hard to understand the Cantonese.
Kids (esp. 15 year old) are at an age that want material things, and I can relate to because many years ago I have been through that age many years ago – I wanted to pick out my own apparel including shoes to impress girls 🙂
But at my current age, I really think opposite: I want to use money to buy time, instead of buy stuff.
Playdate and sleepover
When kids are young, parents sometimes setup playdates for kids.
When kids grow, they want to have their own say and “sleepover” for b-day celebration seems fairly popular among teen girls.
But I realized a few things recently: my 15-year-old would not invite her friends over because out home is much more modest compared to some of her friends. I think to some extent my soon to be 11-year-old felt this way too. So, after about 40 years, my kids end up in similar boat as me – during my middle school and high school years I never invited my friends over too. Different circumstances, obviously, but economy was a factor.
It’s not the end of the world though. On the side of “buying stuff”, if I could go back to it. I felt I am more lenient, or I gave my kids more flexibility compared to what my parents could do back in the day. I told my 15-year-old a story, it was probably when I was a 3rd or 4th grader in the elementary school, and I needed those white tennis shoes for perform (those shoes are somewhat like the low ankle Converse here nowadays, and they are white). I didn’t have those: it would probably cost my parents to sacrifice something else to get the shoes. So my mom borrowed new shoes from a classmate (a girl), and after we used the shoes, my mom washed them and put on some white powder on them, so that they looked like new (or as much as practical). (Update 12-30-2026) Today I told this story to my old daughter when I was teaching her to drive.
The other day, I just noticed a girl, friend of my 15-year-old, had the same $100 a pair adidas 🙂
Priority
So, the other day, my 15-year-old mentioned she doesn’t have graphing calculator. I mentioned that I offered it to her multiple times. She said she put a hold at the library (I assume the high school library). So, there goes the priority: she put apparel and shoes before the calculator.
