I wrote this piece about my maternal grandma last week.
I still need to write another piece for my paternal grandma.
My advice as a 50+ guy: try to see your mom as much as possible/practical. I left my home for boarding school (Zhenhai middle school) when I was 12. I saw my mom once a month when I was in the boarding school (middle school and high school). Left for college at age of 18. I recall once I told my parents I was not going back home for the winter break (and Chinese new year or spring festival), and my mom (who never wrote to me before that), wrote a letter to me asking me to go back home in the winter break.
And left my home country for the US (graduate school) when I was 26. In last 2 years my mom (in China) developed dementia (and Parkinson’s disease) and I visited her in March 2023 (shortly after the China reopening post pandemic) and last summer (June/July 2024). Her condition worsened recently. And I am going to see her again in about 3 weeks.
